15th July 2019 - Restarting an old blog

It has been quite a few months since I last posted on this blog, so as a test in advance of the new Creative Media Level starting next Mon 22nd July. I would throw on a few links and early thoughts around these...

https://www.printmag.com/daily-heller/

The online portal for Steven Heller, one of the 20th/21st centuries creative media commentators. This site is a good starting point for research especially articles for the movements, icons, current thinking and historical contents.

The same with these guys, very good articles.

Thinking about Icons of Graphic Design from the last 40 years… Part 1

During a spare hour in between design work...

I just had a think and a little look around the net this afternoon, after a discussion on Iconic Graphic Design work from the last 40 years, and have found this selection for an initial review of thoughts, which brought back to mind some very creative work and ground breaking at the time.

See what you think as I have covered Corp ID with Blue Chip Brands, Transport Signage, Typography, Advertising and Packaging Agencies. So starting off with...

1. An overview of 6 Corp ID designs including Mobil, Chase Manhattan Bank. Before and After... https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/12/from-mobil-to-chase-bank-6-iconic-logos-and-how-they-came-to-be/248971/#slide7

2. The London Underground Map (150 years old)

3. The New York subway Map. Good Debate on how the different versions of the map, have worked or not worked and Vignelli giving his thoughts from a miffed perspective?...

Part 2 to follow...

The second part of this analysis…

4. BP Branding...

https://landor.com/work/bp seen as Big Petrochemical trying to be 'World Peace and nice?'

5. 80's agencies…

Pentagram, especially the work of Alan Fletcher or David Hillman and their Typography. Minale Tattersfield, or Wolf Olins (possible Wally Olins) his books especially 'On Brand' analysis of how brands develop, has examples like BP, Coca Cola etc.

Also Ogilvy & Mather specially their relaunch of Guinness in the mid 80's and the 'Pure Genius Campaign… I found this link on Youtube, which has a continuous link to over 100 TV ads… Their work was seen as groundbreaking in the mid 80's and for the next 10+ years putting Guinness firmly back on the map...

6. 80's Packaging Agencies and Branding… Jones Knowles Richie, Blackburns, Turner Duckworth and Landor. Agencies here rather than Brand examples, but this could lead to that direction?...

7. And finally. One from Manchester (well had to be included) Peter Saville, this link from an article in the Guardian… https://www.theguardian.com/music/gallery/2011/may/29/joydivision-neworder follows his work for Factory and Tony Wilson. But a more detailed study of his 80's and early 90's work maybe the way to go?

Further thoughts to follow with visuals...

Looking back - Example 3 Design History Personal Influences

Storm Thorgeson

British graphic designer, photographer and music video director, specialist 1944-2013

I first became aware of Storms's work through buying my first album, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, followed by Wish you were here. Though it wasn't until I went to college in 1977, that I fully discovered the depth of his work, and that of his contemporaries most notably Roger Dean.

His work had a huge impression on me, and laid the foundations for a journey of Illustrative and design discovery over the next 4 years at Art College.

Looking back - Example 2 Design History Personal Influences

Tony Forster

British Typographer, Teacher, Mentor and Hand Lettering Specialist 1941-2008

Tony was one of my Tutor's at the old Bolton College of Art for 4 years between Sept 77 - June 1981, but principally in my 2nd and 3rd years, the most influential period of my time. It was Tony who introduced me to the work of Alan Fletcher. Everything I know about Headline and Hand drawn type, and the finer points of typography I learned from Tony, knowledge I now pass on to my students. Huge talent and you're greatly missed fella...

I have in the last couple of years been in contact with Tony's son Dan, and it is with Dan's permission I have the use of the images below, for my book, set in the time of pre-digital era training in the late 70's to the early 80's, called Lost in Typography, it describes life and training in college at that time.

Alan Fletcher

British Graphic Designer 1931 – 2006

One of Britain's most influential and Iconic Graphic Designer/Art Directors of the later half of the 20th Century and into the early 21st Century.

Link to his Obituary posted in the British Newspaper, The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2006/sep/25/guardianobituaries.artsobituaries

Founder of Pentagram, colleague of David Hillman, Mentor to Mancunian (Manchester) Graphic Designer, Peter Saville, Creative Director of Factory Records, Manchester.

Question is: Where does Fletcher's work sit in the list of 10 most influential designers of the last 50 years?
