Tony Forster

British Typographer, Teacher, Mentor and Hand Lettering Specialist 1941-2008


Tony was one of my Tutor's at the old Bolton College of Art for 4 years between Sept 77 - June 1981, but principally in my 2nd and 3rd years, the most influential period of my time. It was Tony who introduced me to the work of Alan Fletcher. Everything I know about Headline and Hand drawn type, and the finer points of typography I learned from Tony, knowledge I now pass on to my students. Huge talent and you're greatly missed fella...

I have in the last couple of years been in contact with Tony's son Dan, and it is with Dan's permission I have the use of the images below, for my book, set in the time of pre-digital era training in the late 70's to the early 80's, called Lost in Typography, it describes life and training in college at that time.
